Components

The AQUAMAT® patented system is composed of multiple layers, each with a specific function. These high-performance components combine to make AQUAMAT® an unequaled irrigation and water conservation system.

  1. Root and algae resistant cover
  2. Drip tapes
  3. Evaporation block layer
  4. Super absorbent felt
  5. Polyethylene containment barrier

1- Root and algae resistant cover

The permeable layer MICROFAB is a physical barrier against wild plants and exterior debris. This layer prevents the proliferation of algae inside the mat due to its resistance to ultraviolet rays (UV), while allowing air and water to circulate freely inside it.  It stays dry and efficiently controls the root-development of the plants.

AQUAMAT® with HD cover is recommended for external use. It's toughness makes it more resistant to possible damage when being stepped on or driven over.

2- Micro-perforated tubes

Micro-perforated tubes are placed 61cm (2 inch) from each other so as to optimize humidity levels within the fabric reservoir layer.  The amount of watering needed will be calculated and adjusted according to the properties of the substrate used, the type of plants being grown, climatic conditions and the amount of rainfall.

3- Evaporation block layer

Composed of 100% high-quality polyester fibers, the make-up of this layer prevents surface evaporation while contributing to the effective distribution of water in the pots through capillary action.  It lets water or rainfall pass through freely but only releases it under the pressure of the pots when placed on the mat.

4- Super absorbent felt

This absorbent fabric is coupled to an anti-evaporation layer. Its superior retention capability (2.5 gallons / square yards® 11.6 liters / square meters) as well as its capillary capacity (12.5 cm ® 5 in) creates a interactive network where the water used by the roots of the plants is constantly being replaced with that stored inside the mat. This ongoing water exchange significantly reduces watering requirements.

5- Total containment barrier

Beneath the upper layers, a 6mm-thick, impermeable polyethylene film creates a series of contiguous pools located every 3.05m (10 feet). These individual pool sections are closed environments which prevents the transmission of diseases from one lot to another.

A 2.5cm (1 inch) seam near the edge of the mat prevents runoff.
